The Smell of Failure

I just got the news that I failed the 1-hour GTT. Totally took the wind right out of my sails.

I thought I was doing so well with my diet. I really haven't been a sugar fanatic at all and have been trying to eat healthier in the past few months. Lots of fruits and veggies. It makes me sick to think that my body or my food choices could be hurting my son.

My 3-hour test is on Tuesday. I pray that my pancreas can pull through on that one.

Well, the point of having the test at this stage is that it's before damage is being done to your baby.

I think the stats are that 40% or so will also fail the 3-hour test. I was borderline and so wasn't send for the 3-hour test - only to discover at 38+3 that I had GD. I must have had a mild case because the baby wasn't affected by it at all.

Oh, sweetie, I can see why you're disappointed. That sucks! But, Rachel is right---catching it early helps put any modifications in place, so I'm sure your little guy is in great shape. =)

Good luck on the 3-hour test! Hope it eases your mind.

Don't beat yourself up. If you do have GD they will keep a closer eye on you.

Hang in there.

I'm sorry, but it does seem that a lot of people who fail the one hour end up passing the 3. But I know I'd still worry

Good luck on Tuesday!

Bummer! Thankfully most people who fail the 1 hour do go on to pass the 3 hour. My fingers are crossed for you!! And while GD is no fun, it's definitely manageable.

Every hope for you that the 3 hour test gives you much better results. Im sorry this knocked the wind out of you--I am thinking about you!

I failed the 1 hour but passed the 3 hour. It's possible that the 1 hour just wasn't right. My doctor said the 3 hour is more accurate.

lots and lots of people fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 - sending you my good thouhts!

KP said...

it's really only 15% of people who fail the 1hr that actually have GDM and fail the 3hr....so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Wishing you good luck on the three-hour test.

Crossing my fingers for you!

Ah, Kristen,

I'm sorry the 1hr gtt result wasn't all you could hope for. Fingers crossed you pass the 3hr gtt,

That sucks! Like everyone else said, I've heard of so many people that have failed the 1 hour test and pass the 3 hour test. Good luck on the 3 hour test!

Heya - I failed every 1 hour test and pass the 3 hour. This time, I'm going to ask to just skip the 1 hour and go righ to the 3 hour.

Don't worry until you get there!!

Oh - and bring a snack to the 3 hour. You'll want to eat IMMEDIATELY after that last blood draw!!

I'm sorry. :(

You know though that it's NOT your fault right? If that's going to happen, sometimes you can only do your best, and we know you have.

Bleh. I'm so sorry Kristin. The upside is that it could have just been that you were having a particularly sweet day. I know many people who have failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour with flying colors.

Good luck on the 3 hour. I'll be praying that, indeed, your pancreas performs like a champ and you do not have GD. HUGS!!!

has many have already said, many fail the one-hour and pass the three-hour -- me included! wishing you the best of luck on tuesday!

I'm sorry about the test. Don't blame yourself, you're doing what you can and if further remediation is necessary, that's why they do the test!

Hope Tuesday's test goes smoothly.

Sunshine is thriving inside your body - and I too failed the 1-hour only to pass the 3. Hoping for a good outcome on tuesday!

Do not panic yet. If it is GD, then you are happy to be catching it now. On the other side of that coin, there are a lot of women who fail the one hour and go on and pass the three hour.

((hugs))

I'm so sorry you failed it! I failed my one hour and then borderline failed my 3 hour, so they put me on the diet, and I've been doing so well that I only have to check sugars 2x a day. Honestly, you'll probably pass the 3 hour test but even if you don't and just have a mild case, it will be easy to manage. I was VERY upset when it happened to me but it is not the traumatizing issue I thought it would be. Good luck!!

Kristine said...

Yes, frustrating! I do know several people who failed the one hour but did fine with the 3 hour.

Best of luck!

I'm sorry you failed the 1 hour test. As the other ladies pointed out, though, there's a good chance that you'll breeze right through the 3 hour test without a hitch. Fingers are crossed that all goes well.

I'm sorry to hear about your 1 hr test and will say a little prayer that you pass the 3 hr with flying colors.

I hope the second test goes better!

Oh what a bummer. Try to hang in there until after your 3 hour test. I'll be hoping that you pass with flying colors.

SassyCupcakes said...

Oh crap. That sucks. I hope the 3 hour test goes really well and you don't need to worry about GD at all.

Sorry to hear that you failed the test, wish i had something insightful to tell you, hope the 3 hour test has better results!

I'm so sorry you failed the test. Please don't blame yourself though - it's largely genetic and related to things other than diet. And I've heard of so many who fail the 1 hour and pass the 3 hours...I'll be thinking of you.

Erin said...

You're doing all you can if you're making good choices, and Rachel is right about the reason that you do it now.

Kim said...

Hope the 3-hr. test give you the results you want. I have a few friends who failed the one hour and passed the three hour. And one who failed both - she looked at it like what is a few insulin shots and some finger pokes to get a baby in arms? Good Luck!

Good Luck on the 3 hour test. I am just learning about all of these things, but I know it must be difficult to anticipate the results.

Aw. Hopefully this is a false positive. There are lots of those!! Pulling for you!!

I know this is totally unrelated but my mom used to tell me that the reason I got the most mosquito bites is that my blood is the sweetest. :-)

I'm sure someone has already said this, but ... Many, many people fail the one-hour test who don't fail the three-hour test (happened to me). But even if you do, lots of moms with GD have healthy babies. I completely understand why you are feeling bad about it, though -- esp. after infertility, I wanted to feel like my body could handle the rest in stride. The three-hour test SUCKS. Bring a book and don't be afraid to ask if they have a comfy chair you can sit in. I laid down on the floor in the waiting room and they came and got me and took me to a recliner in the back, where I slept through most of the three hours.
